Frequently Asked Questions

What occurs during an initial therapy appointment?

Whether you have seen a psychologist before or this is your first time, it is understandable that you may be feeling nervous about your first session with Jade. The initial session is an opportunity for you and Jade to get to know each other. Jade will likely ask you a range of questions about what you have been experiencing and other information about your life. You are welcome to share as little or as much as feels comfortable. You are also welcome to ask any questions you have about the therapy process, Jade’s approach, or any other questions that come to mind. Jade is also willing to hear your feedback and adjust the approach to best suit your needs. For child psychology sessions, the initial session is usually attended by parents or caregivers only.

Am I eligible for a Medicare rebate?

If you or your child have a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) or Eating Disorders Plan (EDP) from your GP, Paediatrician or Psychiatrist, and you have a valid referral letter, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate of $136 per each 50 minute session. Currently, most individuals are eligible for up to 20 rebates per calendar year under a MHTP and 40 rebates per year under a EDP. You may have to return to your referring doctor for a new referral letter at several points throughout the year to continue to claim a rebate. If you are unsure if you are eligible for a MHTP or EDP contact your GP or see further information here. Please note that Jade Goodman Psychology is not a bulk billing practice. Unfortunately, Medicare rebates are not available for parent/caregiver-only sessions, in instances where your child is the client.

Are you a registered NDIS provider?

No. However, if you have a self-managed NDIS plan you may still be able to access this service and claim the fee against your plan. If you are uncertain or for further information, please contact the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).

How many sessions will be required?

The number of sessions required differs depending on the individual, their specific needs and the type of therapy. Jade can discuss this with you in your initial session and work with you collaboratively to develop a treatment plan and give an indication of how many sessions may be required.

How important is client-therapist fit?

The therapeutic relationship is the most important factor when evaluating treatment outcomes. You should feel comfortable and safe with your psychologist. This might take a few sessions, while you get to know each other, but you will likely have an idea of whether the relationship will be a good fit from the start. Because this is such an important element of psychological service, Jade offers a quick 10 minute chat for all new potential clients to help you determine if you would like to book in.
